"Linguagem, a work I created in 2015, consists of two silkscreens on paper placed side by side, mounted on a support. One has the world negro printed on it and the other, preto. In one panel the letters are printed in black on black canvas, making the background appear more opaque than the word, while in the other what surrounds the letters is printed in black over the same black canvas, making the word less opaque than its surroundings. Therefore, the letters alternately operate as 'figure' and as 'background', per the expression in painting; in that formulation, the 'figure' is the image, which, for the viewer, becomes what stands out, while the 'ground' refers to the rest, which doesn't stand out. By choosing black for both 'figure' and 'background', I created a nuanced effect on the surface of each canvas as well as in the relationship between the two objects."
