[The composition by Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar consists of six lightboxes with LED lamps, it incorporates images from the 1980s of Serra Pelada, a gold mining project in Brazil, to question capitalism and power relations. The piece exposes the ongoing legacies of colonial violence and the persistence of inequalities imposed on vulnerable populations. Through his photographs, Jaar reflects on the power of visual codes and of those created and disseminated by the media, which both informs and obscures our understanding of the world. This same series was featured in his solo exhibition at SESC Pompeia, in partnership with the 34th São Paulo Biennial, in 2021.]
