Na Batalha de Maria (In Maria's Battle) is the title of a performance by Cinthia Marcelle from 2003 in the context of the Manifestação Internacional da Performance (MIP), in Belo Horizonte. In the work, Marcelle explores her immersion in Capoeira de Angola and counts on the participation of her master João Angoleiro and his family, who play berimbaus and atabaques during the performance. The artist’s body is wrapped in Portuguese stones, which she takes from the pile one by one, throwing them against the wall. Subsequently, Cinthia walks towards the wall and performs a headstand and her green skirt turns inside out, revealing a pair of gold-colored panties. The work Na Batalha de Maria is the recollection and materialization of the artist’s performance. The clothing, originally worn during the work, is framed and presented alongside the photographic records. Three Portuguese stones used in the performance are placed on the first frame.
