[The piece, first exhibited at Galeria Luisa Strina in 2021, is part of the Residência series, which reflects on themes of self-esteem and lucidity—central concerns in Panmela Castro’s artistic practice. Through her work, the artist seeks to represent diverse and marginalized bodies, challenging established aesthetic and social norms. The bronze sculpture is a reproduction of an engraving found on a tree in the village where a friend of the artist lives. Etched with the words “autoestima” (self-esteem) and “lucidez” (lucidity), the piece asserts and questions identity—especially that of Black women and LGBTQIA+ individuals—within a broader context of resistance and empowerment.]
