ARCOmadrid takes place this week, from March 4 to 8. Luisa Strina is participating in the fair with a solo presentation by Juliana dos Santos, featuring new works at booth 7B01.

The project is accompanied by a text by Carlos Quijon Jr., an art historian, critic, and curator based in Manila and New York.

“Across her practice, Juliana dos Santos cultivates inchoate forms,” he writes. “In paintings using the Clitorea ternatea flower, we glean traces of the pigment’s movement—seeping out of each floret, carried by water, and settling into pattern. The pigments are allowed to oxidize further on the canvas, as the pigment deteriorates, the activity of painting continues. Inchoate here is not a quality set against finishedness. In dos Santos’s works, inchoateness is a sensibility that leans into possibilities of material, opens up to an ethics and erotics of co-existence.”
