  • "Strange How Things Work Out"

    Presented by Mario Garcia Torres
  • N. Date is an artist who’s biographical data is largely unknown. Strange How Things Work Out presents the work of this enigmatic figure for the first time in a public setting.

Gathered here are three different bodies of work titled by this exhibition’s reaserch: Geometric Coincidences (a prodigious stage represented by a number of oil pastel works that suggest a non-rationalistic approach to geometric forms); Lonely Pedestrianism (intimate drawings and sculptures that indicate an ordinary and somewhat poetic take on astronomy); and Other Realities (contemporary textiles produced after found sketches that insinuate a search towards parallel existences).

Both, doing research for and experiencing this presentation, demand a non-conformist notions of truth, geography and time. Date’s traces indicate the artist could have been, in fact, a wordly charachter; one that triggered an asynchronous and sometimes unbelivable story.

Influenced by radically disimilar art movements, and shaped by the unsteady path of foreign writters that pass through Mexico during the 20th century, Date’s practice insinuate that ideas surrounding coincidence, incompletness, doubt and incoherence had become the leading principles of an extraordinary life.

  • 'There is a certain intention to curb rationalization and incorporate geometry into a more complex understanding of the world. This is the main reason why I thought that Brazil could be an interesting place to present the work of N. Date.' [Mario García Torres]

  • A second set of works, possibly after the geometric series, deals with astronomical themes. It is believed, for example, that Elementi di Astronomia (date unknown) was made prior to the trip to Mexico, and possibly taken along the crossing through Mexico. The only certain fact is that this work belongs to a series of pieces - all made in graphite, on a kind of synthetic plaster on natural jute, depicting pseudo-scientific sketches of astronomy.

  • 'The textiles displayed in the gallery have been recently produced, based on Date’s sketches and instructions. Its unknown if Date in fact produced any of them. There is references to textile making not only on sketches but also in the yute drawings. It seems that Date was not only interested in the formal qualities and what was depicted in the design but also on the organisation of the thread. I think Date saw it as some kind of matrix, as a way of organising and understanding life, where forms could jut out off. ' [Mario García Torres]
