Born and raised in Brazil, Clarissa Tossin has for years created artworks that explore the shortcomings of Brazilian modernization and crises related to the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. Tossin's materials often point to forms of industrial and consumer waste, juxtaposing her concern for the Earth's dwindling natural resources with the longevity of the garbage humans create. The weavings in this gallery demonstrate Tossin's practice of using Amazon.com cardboard boxes that have been cut into strips and assembled into weavings, highlighting the centrality of fiber work in Amazonian traditions. Once used to describe the mighty South American river that was a conduit of goods, in our current global economy the word Amazon now conjures the American multinational company known for connecting the world through e-commerce. For her 2021 "Future Geography" series of weavings, Tossin combines strips of Amazon delivery boxes with reproductions of NASA satellite images of the Moon, and Mars. By bringing these elements of commerce and exploration together, Tossin points to how mapping territories, including those in Space is often the first step towards planning for future resource extraction.
